When we think of deadly animals, the biggest and baddest often come to mind. But looking at the data in terms of which ones have caused the most death and devastation, we find that a surprising number of them aren't what we'd expect.
Sharks
One would think the shark to be high on this list given how Hollywood doesn't infrequently depict this creature as a serial killer of the sea. But the truth is that shark attacks are rare, and deaths from shark attacks are even rarer; not more than 10 people die from shark attacks every year, and a lot of the shark attacks reported every year are the result of human provocation.
Contrast that number with the 11,417 sharks killed by humans not every year but every hour, a big reason for which is the increasing popularity of shark fins being used as a delicacy. So, if anything, it's the sharks who should be scared of us, and be depicting us as serial killers, and not the other way around.
