Barkmann's abuse was unrelenting and covered a horrifying spectrum of inhumanity. Her violent streak became particularly obvious during the infamous selections, where she would routinely choose the weakest and most vulnerable for execution. She displayed an almost perverse pleasure in her role, frequently abusing and tormenting prisoners who were unable for work. It is reported that she used her guard dog to attack and scare prisoners and enjoyed scenes of violence and suffering.
