Randy Woodfield just wanted to play football, but instead, he killed at least 44 people and committed over 100 crimes.

The I-5 Killer’s Massacre Comes to an End

In March, Woodfield was brought into the Salem Police Department for interrogation. One of his previous victims, Lisa Garcia, who luckily had survived a brutal encounter with the killer, identified him in a photo line-up. Two days later, Woodfield’s apartment was searched, and the police had found a spent .32 shell casing inside a racquetball bag, as well as a roll of tape that matched the one found on the victims. Woodfield was taken into custody after being positively identified by several Oregon robbery victims. After nine days, he was indicted for murder, rape, sodomy, attempted kidnapping, armed robbery, and illegal possession of firearms that were initiated from various jurisdictions in Washington and Oregon.

During the summer, Woodfield was on trial in Salem for the murder of Hull, as well as sodomy and attempted murder of Wilmot. Wilmot testified against him in court as a key witness in his prosecution. On June 26, 1981, Woodfield was convicted on all counts and sentenced to life imprisonment plus 90 years.

In the fall, he was on trial for sodomy and weapons charges tied to one of the attacks in a restaurant bathroom and received an additional 35 years added to his already-instated sentence.

By 1990, after more victims came forward and DNA testing and other methods became available, he was linked to a total number of killings ranging from twenty-five to as many as forty-four unsolved homicides. He had also been estimated to have committed at least sixty unsolved rapes.

When he was interviewed, he never confessed to any murder or rape charges and insisted that he never raped a girl because he didn’t have to. He said they wanted him.
