Mother Shipton, born as Ursula Southeil in 1488 in England, was a famous English soothsayer and prophetess known for her strange appearance and her ability to make prophetic statements in a poetic way. Many have questioned the authenticity of Mother Shipton's prophecies, suggesting that they may have been fabricated or misunderstood over time.
Cardinal Wolsey and the Witch of Yorkshire
One of the most famous prophecies attributed to Mother Shipton is that of the downfall of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, one of King Henry VIII's closest advisors.
In 1529, Mother Shipton reportedly prophesied, "Cardinal Wolsey shall never reach York", a prophecy that came to fruition as Wolsey fell ill and died en route to York where he was due to negotiate peace between the King and the northern nobles.
Wolsey's death linked to Mother Shipton's prophecy, further enhanced the fearsome reputation of this supposed witch.
Although there is an ongoing debate about the authenticity of this prophecy, the tale has nonetheless become an integral part of Mother Shipton's lore and the lore of Knaresborough itself.
