Brahan Seer, Scotland’s own ‘Nostradamus'
Brahan Seer, Scotland’s own ‘Nostradamus'
Scotland has its very own version of Nostradamus in the form of Brahan Seer, a legendary prophet who is said to have predicted many significant events in Scottish history.

Hailing from the 17th century and originally from Uig on the Isle of Lewis, the Seer - or 'Dark Kenneth', as he was referred to by some - was believed to be a member of the MacKenzie Clan. Despite working as a farm labourer at the Brahan estate, which served as the home of the Seaforth chieftains, both the Seer and the Seaforths would ultimately meet their intertwined fates at the hands of his 'dark' powers.

Legend has it that the Seer gained clairvoyance after dozing off on a fairy hill and awakening to find a small stone with a hole carved through its centre in his coat. Peering through this object is said to have bestowed the 'second sight' upon him, albeit at the cost of his vision in that eye. While some sceptics may doubt his existence, historical records indicate that a man by the name of 'Coinneach Odhar' did indeed live during the 16th century and was accused of witchcraft.
