In 1969, the Vietnam War loomed large over the American psyche. The country was embroiled in a conflict that it would ultimately lose, and one that would ultimately steal the youthful aspirations of many young men. Knowing that he would likely be drafted anyway, Ridgway joined the Navy while still in high school.
