Joseph "The Animal" Barboza was one of the most feared hitmen in the realms of organized crime. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1932 into a Cape Verdean immigrant family.

Growing up, he was exposed to the criminal world in his neighbourhood, which primarily consisted of delinquency and petty thievery by local gangs.

Like many troubled teens of his time, Barboza dropped out of school and began a serious criminal career.

The nickname 'The Animal' was given to him because of his violent exploits and hair-trigger temper that made him a formidable and ruthless mobster in the underworld.

Barboza first began his life of crime by committing burglaries and thefts, but would soon graduate into organized crime.

He was known to participate in loan sharking, illegal gambling, and murder-for-hire. His fearsome reputation quickly caught the attention of the ruling mobsters of New England.
