Richard Maudsley was born into abusive life. There is even an element that people believe his treatment is unjust.
The Wakefield Murders
Maudsley in his cell
Within months of arriving at Wakefield, Maudsley started leaving paper coffins in the cells of inmates. Despite this, he started to mix and everything was progressing well in the prison until he invited wife-killer Salney Darwood into his cell. Maudsley stabbed and garrotted him. He then went on to corner William Roberts, who was serving a seven-year sentence for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl. He stabbed him, smashing his head against the cell wall.
Following this, he walked into the prison officers room. Putting the homemade dagger on the table, he stated, ‘there will be two less for roll call tonight.’
