Delving into the Haunting Legends of Fyvie Castle
Among the countless Scottish castles and fortresses with haunting tales, Fyvie Castle holds its unique niche. The legendary narrative of this castle circles around two sinister, inexorable curses that have stood the test of time.
The first curse is related to Thomas the Rhymer, a 13th-century seer and bard. He tried to kiss the wife of the then Laird (Lord) of Fyvie, which caused a dispute, and he was thrown out of the castle. To retaliate, he proceeded to curse the castle, speaking of three tragedies that would befall its owners.
The second curse traces its roots to a lady named Dame Lilias Drummond, also known as the 'Green Lady.' Her tortured soul allegedly haunts the castle. According to the legend, after a loveless marriage and resultant melancholy, she died mysteriously one night. Her husband, remarried within months and on their first night, loud sighs were heard outside their room. The next morning, they found her name mysteriously etched deep into the castle's stone window, from the outside.
