The ancient cemetery of Fontanelle (Cimitero Delle Fontanelle) in Naples. Italy, is a unique burial site that holds great significance within the local community. This cemetery stands as a testament to the longstanding and deeply-rooted religious beliefs of the people of Naples, particularly their devotion to the souls of Purgatory.

Fontanelle Cemetery has a history dating back to the 16th century when it was initially used as a burial ground for victims of the Black Death. However, it was not until the 17th century that it gained prominence due to the emerging Cult of the Souls of Purgatory in Naples. This cult, also known as the Anima delle Fontanelle, centers around the belief that the souls in Purgatory can intercede on behalf of the living and help them with their troubles.

At the heart of this cult is the notion of establishing a personal connection with the souls in Purgatory. Devotees believe that by offering prayers, candles, and Masses on behalf of these souls, they can alleviate their suffering and aid them in reaching the gates of Heaven. Fontanelle Cemetery became the focal point of this devotion, with people adopting specific rituals to honor the forgotten souls.
