Conviction and Execution
The convictions made way for the barbaric public executions, staged on November 29, 1600. The method used was horrifying and marks the Pappenheimer case as one of the most brutal witch trials in history. The family was made to march in parade, clad in sulfur-soaked shirts. They were subsequently tortured—impaled on a wheel and slowly roasted over a fire.
The leader of the execution, Friedrich Förner, justifying these extreme measures, claimed that these heinous punishments were required to purge the world of the family's impurities and to dissuade any potential followers of witchcraft.
